Burby Shirts
On a Friday afternoon at "The Shop" in Toronto, Jamie the T-Shirt maker for the upcoming TV show "Green Force"
was on the phone with
Spot98.net. As she tried to remain formal, tears from laughter twinkled down her face...
she finaly was able to blur out some words, "That Sounds Like Me". What caused this laugh attack was the
pass along one liner by Kent Southwell;
"These Transfers are so easy to apply even a Shaved Ape can do it, in fact, I think one does".
What this means in Tranfer/T-Shirt making lingo is that these Heat Press Transfers are very simple to print on shirts.
So, we asked Kent Southwell the creator of "Burby Shirts" and the growing popular "Shaved Ape" one liner to tell us a little more about the guy behind Burby.
TBible Interview with Kent Southwell
Q: Vancouver, did you grow up there ?
No, I didn't grow up in Vancouver. For the most part, I grew up in a small town in the interior of BC.
Castlegar, BC pop. ~8000. It was, and still is a typical small town. Full of hockey players, mill workers,
and one or two hippies.
Beyond Castlegar, I moved around the interior of the province, and ended up in Vancouver. I've been here for 10 years.
Q: What else does Kent do besides the "Burby Shirts" ?
When I'm not focussed on Burby Shirts, I work as a fine art portrait photographer, and a custom picture framer. Mostly doing work for
commercial galleries, museums, corporate and private clients.
Q: How did Art find you ? ...or did you find It ?
Art found me back in Castlegar, while in high school. It was essentially a mix-up in my class timetable.
I was scheduled to be in wood-working class, but the school made the mistake of putting me in Art class.
So, I attended the Art class until they fixed my schedule. There was a girl in this class who I had liked for quite a while. -So I stayed.
After high school, I studied Fine Arts and Media Production.
Q: Frozen Shirts, that has a nice Fresh ring to it. What does it mean ?
Frozen Shirts is the name of my "parent company" . I had this idea of a website being like a supermarket.
You could get a frozen shirt... packed fresh. Wrapped in brown paper, tied with butchers string, and a big red stamp "FROZEN SHIRTS".
I plan on using Frozen Shirts to be an online retail t-shirt shop carrying not just Burby Shirts, but the many other brands out there that I love.
- Small indie-designers like me.
Q: I think my favourite shirt design is the Folk Bot with the Guitar, is it ...Bob Dylan, Stompin' Tom, Pete Seeger or some other Folk music artist ? or none of the above ? ...Who is "Folk Bot" ?
Folk 'Bot is kind of more of a Pete Seeger type bot. More traditional folk than country folk. But he's an everyman's 'bot. - With socialist leanings...
Q: What's next for Burby ? ....
What's next for Burby? I want to add new designs , re-design the site, and start providing retailers with new products that you can't yet find on burbyshirts.com.
Hoodies, polos, girls fashion type shirts (not just t-shirts). Shops like having the products that are sort of "exclusive" to them. - So their Burby products and mine don't overlap so much. Because my printing method is heat-press, I'm very flexible when it comes to offering different products.
I also want to try adding other fun products like vinyl wall-coverings, stickers, - fun stuff for kids.
And if I could get Ellen DeGeneres and Dane Cook wearing my shirts, I'd be a very happy guy.
